The Tooth Fairy (or Easter Bunny, or Santa Claus . . .): a fun and harmless fiction, or a pointless justification for lying to children?
Of course we all know they don’t exist. But that’s a mature mind speaking here, a mind that will need extensive and years of convincing that they are “real”. Little kids, most of the time, don’t need any convincing. Just give them a character – real of fictional – with a catchy or shiny name and they will stick to it for most of their lives. This can cause positive and in some cases, extreme negative (re)actions.
Positive as in people who are afraid or unwilling to let go of their past will find this early fantasy world a cushion to land onto once they realize, or are in the midst of, the grim reality of the world, of real life. This can, however, be seen as negative, too!
I personally find these things irrational and did not grow with this fantasy, but I did read about them in school and as light subjects. I believe this should be kept at a minimum and, if possible, erased from their memories as soon as possible!
